I was not a big fan of 3rd party applications on the iPhone. I’m one of those who think that it is perfect for what it is because it does everything I expected it to do. Also, a big reason for not installing apps is most of them are pretty useless and, dare I say it, ugly. Well, not anymore. Though a lot of them still are ugly (who am I to complain? they’re free), there are notable ones which will definitely add the much-needed functionality that we had to do without before. I assume you already have a jailbroken iPhone and have Installer.app installed.

weTool

Pretty much every one I show my iPhone to ended up being wowed by it. Until I tell them that it cannot forward SMS and for most it definitely is a deal-breaker. Luckily, weTool now lets you forward messages to any of your contacts. If that’s not enough, you can also use it to send texts to multiple recipients and copy messages to the Notes application. Call logs can also be manage allowing you to delete individual entries for whatever reason (I can only think of bad ones).

weTool is not yet available via Community Sources so you need to add: http://app.weiphone.com/installer/ in your source list.

AFPd

If you’re on a Mac, the easiest way to transfer files to and from your iPhone is through Finder. AFPd (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) lets you do just that. With Leopard, it’s much even easier as your iPhone will show up immediately in the Finder’s sidebar. On Tiger, you still need to enter your iPhone’s IP address. No more using SFTP or SSH for basic file tasks.

iRadio

Even with hours and hours of music and podcasts, there are some times you just want to listen to other things or discover new music. No, installing iRadio won’t magically use your iPhone’s GSM antenna to receive FM station but rather stream internet radio stations using EDGE or WiFi. There are a host of stations to choose from, all of them just a tap away. Don’t get too excited yet because unfortunately, the software is still in early beta stages and extremely buggy. It sometimes just close at random intervals and refuse to play some stations. However, it has a lot of potential and I cannot wait until they sort out the quirks to make this one a killer app.

MobileScrobbler

Update: Review of the new version is right here.

I’m a huge fan of Last.fm and since I listen to music 90% of the time on my iPhone, the service became useless for me. I literally squeal with delight when I saw MobileScrobbler on Installer.app. I can finally submit songs, scrobble as they call it, to Last.fm without using hacks which involves not playing any song in iTunes prior to syncing your iPhone and then sync an iPod Shuffle just to trigger scrobbling. Inconvenient, I tell you.

MobileScrobbler

MobileScrobbler’s interface is simple. You just need to enter your Last.FM username and password and upon logging-in you will see a musical note icon besides the clock which indicates that it is submitting tracks. For those of us who doesn’t have an unlimited data plan, it queues up track and just submit it the next time you play songs with WiFi turned on. Unfortunately, as with most iPhone native applications, it’s not very reliable. You have to keep watch if the application is still running in the background as it quits often.
